Athlete of the Month – Matt Leonhard

Longtime member, Matt Leonhard, was an obvious choice for June Athlete of the Month!

Like all of us, Matt’s CrossFit career has ebbed and flowed, but lately the coaches have been taking note of how consistent and hardworking he is! He’s been hitting it hard- wowing us with his amazing endurance in running and rowing workouts.

Matt is down 25+lbs and he continues to work toward improving his performance and his overall health.

Let’s make sure we hold him accountable to participating in one of our in-house competitions!!

1.  When and where did you start CrossFitting? I started 5+ years ago right here at CFNH. Wodify says 2014 but I’m pretty sure I was around before wodify.

2.  What are some of your goals to accomplish in 2019? I would love to get some more consistent double unders. I would also like to participate in an in-house competition.

3.  What are some of your recent accomplishments of which you’re most proud? I have lost 25+lbs this year. I decided at the beginning of January I needed to commit to my health. I did whole30 for a few month and made sure I was at CrossFit 3x per week.

4.  Do you adhere to any form of daily/weekly diet regimen to power your workouts?  What does your dream cheat meal/day look like? I can’t say that I’m strict with whole30 but I try to limit my added sugars and try to make sure I’m bringing enough food and snacks each day to keep me from temptation.

Cheat meal- that’s tough but a nice sandwich from Gaetanos deli in Stratford or pizza from bar.

5. Design 2 WODs:  1 that is your bread & butter, filled with your movement strengths; 1 that is all goats (movement weaknesses you feel you need to improve).

Bread & Butter is something with light to no weight and some running. 16min amrap – 400m run, 10 wall balls, 10 KBS

Goats – 21/15/12 – thrusters with 50 DU between each round.

6. How do you spend your time when you’re away from CFNH? I’m married with 2 boys (7 & 4) I help coach my oldest baseball team so that keeps me busy this time of year. I also play men’s softball once a week in Westport.

7. What is one fact that other CFNHers may not know about you? I am a huge die hard Chicago Cubs fan. So much my dog is named Wrigley after Wrigley Field.

8.  Do you have any motivational thoughts or suggestions to folks just getting started at CFNH?
1st is check your ego at the door. Don’t feel you have to always do the rx weights or movements. I have learned it’s better to scale and get through a workout then to rx and possibly hurt myself by losing proper form. 2nd is find someone in your class that will push you to work harder than you would of by yourself. A little friendly competition is a good thing.
