About JoHannah

Before CrossFit, "athletic" was not an adjective I used to describe myself. I stopped playing tennis in high school when the coach made everyone run an 8 minute mile AGAIN because I didn't make it in time, and I still pretty much have one running pace whether my life is in danger or not. About 8 years ago when I was teaching elementary school, I started to really get into yoga, and about 5 years ago I realized that I wasn't going to be able to *wish* myself into the life I wanted. I started making a lot of changes in both what I ate and how much I exercised. I started CrossFit with a friend through a LivingSocial ad, and shortly after finishing my on-ramp, joined CrossFit New Haven. I've changed a lot in the past four years here, and found a family that has kept me going through tough times, in and outside of the gym, even when they didn't know it. After I completed my yoga teacher training, CFNH brought me on to coach our yoga classes twice a week. As a student of both CrossFit and yoga, I don't know how I would do one without the other. Yoga makes me aware, and more importantly curious, about the limits my mind creates about what I can or can't do - CrossFit pushes me past them. In the same way, I ask a lot of my body in a workout, and yoga balances that intensity with restoration.

As a coach I encourage our athletes to challenge their own limits and get the most out of their workout. My favorite moments are when an athlete says to me, "I can't believe I just did that!" and when the whole class rallies around the athlete who is almost done and needs that extra push.
